The United Arab Emirates has deployed six solar-powered health centres in the Indian state of Karnataka, benefiting over 200,000 people. These facilities, located in remote communities with limited access to electricity, allow residents to receive essential healthcare services locally, reducing the need for lengthy journeys to urban medical hubs. The initiative was executed by the Selco Foundation under the Zayed Sustainability Prize’s Beyond2020 programme, aiming to enhance healthcare accessibility and sustainability. The solar-powered health centres were constructed in southwest Karnataka, according to reports from the Wam news agency. These locations had previously struggled with inadequate infrastructure, making it difficult for individuals to access timely medical care. By integrating renewable energy into healthcare delivery, the project ensures continuous operation of critical equipment such as fetal monitors, phototherapy units, and portable baby warmers. This enables the provision of neonatal and maternal care, significantly improving health outcomes in underserved regions. Ahmed Al Sayegh, Minister of Health and Prevention, highlighted the UAE’s ongoing efforts to address global health disparities. He noted that the deployment of these facilities underscores the nation’s dedication to fostering resilient communities and promoting international collaboration. The initiative aligns with the vision of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, whose legacy of compassionate action and sustainability inspired the Zayed Sustainability Prize. The Beyond2020 scheme, initiated by the organisers of the Zayed Sustainability Prize, focuses on delivering innovative, sustainable solutions to pressing challenges faced by vulnerable populations worldwide. Supported by both local and international governments, the programme has already implemented several impactful projects, including providing clean drinking water to 10,000 people in rural Vietnam and 9,000 in Ethiopia. Similar initiatives have addressed issues related to food security, water scarcity, and energy access in countries such as Nepal, Sudan, Uganda, Jordan, Egypt, Cambodia, Madagascar, and the Philippines. Harish Hande, CEO of the Selco Foundation, emphasized the transformative role of sustainable energy in healthcare. He stated that solar-powered health facilities not only increase access to quality care but also inspire hope and aspiration among communities. The foundation’s mission extends beyond immediate improvements, aiming to replicate this model nationwide to ensure that sustainable energy consistently enhances public health outcomes. India currently operates more than 30,000 primary health centres and 150,000 sub-centres, many situated in remote areas where logistical barriers hinder effective healthcare delivery. In these regions, the lack of reliable power infrastructure often results in extended travel times and increased financial burdens for patients seeking treatment. The new solar-powered health centres aim to mitigate these challenges by offering consistent, reliable medical services powered entirely by renewable energy. The Zayed Sustainability Prize, founded in 2008, celebrates organizations working on projects related to climate action, health, food, energy, water, and education. This year marks the 18th edition of the prize, which received 10,233 applications from 177 countries, reflecting its growing influence and reach. Through initiatives like Beyond2020, the UAE continues to demonstrate its commitment to global sustainability and humanitarian aid, leveraging innovation to create lasting positive change.
