Syria delays first session of transitional parliament without explanation

The Syrian transitional parliament, established under the leadership of new President Ahmed al-Sharaa, has postponed its first session without providing an explanation. The parliament, tasked with drafting a new elections law over a 30-month term, was initially set to meet on Monday but was delayed by authorities. This follows the dissolution of Syria’s previous regime after the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. The new parliament's membership is being selected through local committees, with President al-Sharaa appointing a portion of its members. Some regions, like Druze-majority Suwayda province, have yet to complete their selections due to ongoing tensions. The transitional government has taken steps to integrate previously autonomous regions, including Kurdish-controlled areas, into the national framework.
