Seoul libraries become summer's coolest hangouts

Public libraries in Seoul are becoming popular summer destinations, offering air-conditioned spaces and various cultural activities during July and August. As part of the 'Libraries Are Cool: Off & Library' campaign, 223 libraries across the city are hosting over 1,665 programs, including lectures, performances, exhibitions, hands-on activities, and film screenings. Some libraries have created unique experiences such as indoor reading camps, outdoor book camps, and themed photo zones for children. Several libraries extend their hours into the evening, allowing adults to read without distractions and hosting film screenings and astronomy-related events. The initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Seoul Metropolitan Government to use libraries as cooling centers during extreme heat, supported by air-conditioning subsidies.
