BEIJING, CHINA - The 43rd "Baidui Cup" Football Tournament concluded in Beijing on 31 August 2026, marking another milestone in China’s youth football landscape. The event, which began in 1984, drew over 20,000 young players from 1,481 teams, setting a new record for participation. The tournament introduced a groundbreaking "two-track" system, dividing competitors into Popularization and Competitive groups, a move designed to better serve both casual enthusiasts and aspiring professionals. The "Baidui Cup" has long been recognized as one of the longest-running youth amateur football tournaments in China. Unlike many other competitions, it has maintained continuous operation since its inception, making it a unique fixture in the nation’s sporting calendar. This year’s edition marked a significant evolution, as organizers moved away from a traditional structure where teams of varying skill levels competed together. Instead, they created two distinct pathways tailored to different goals and audiences. The Popularization Group was opened to all young football lovers, emphasizing fun and inclusivity. It featured 14 age-based categories, spanning from six-year-olds up to high school students. For the youngest participants, such as those in the six-year-old division, no rankings were recorded, and everyone received awards. This approach aimed to nurture interest in football at the grassroots level and expand the foundation of future talent. In contrast, the Competitive Group was structured for more advanced teams, including those from professional clubs, sports schools, and school representatives. It included 10 age categories, ranging from eight to seventeen years old. These matches served as a platform for identifying and developing reserve talent, providing a rigorous environment for young athletes to hone their skills. A representative from the Beijing Municipal Sports Bureau highlighted the significance of the "two-track" system, noting that it transformed the Baidui Cup from a simple amateur event into a broader youth tournament framework. During the tournament, Fu Ming, an international referee known for his role in the FIFA World Cup 2026™, presided over several Competitive Group matches. Shao Jiayi, the tournament’s image ambassador and head coach of the Chinese men’s national football team, also played a key role, presenting awards and inspiring the participants to compete with confidence.
