Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State recently unveiled the first phase of the 3.5-kilometre Ila-Orangun township road dualisation, marking a major infrastructure milestone for the region. The project, described by the governor as a critical component of his administration's development strategy, aims to enhance commerce, mobility, and safety for local residents. In a statement released by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke highlighted how the dual carriageway would facilitate easier transportation of agricultural products, improve access to educational institutions and healthcare facilities, and connect Ila to other towns in the state. The governor emphasized that the dual carriageway is more than just a road, it serves as a lifeline for economic activity and community engagement. The Director of Research and Planning in the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, Olalekan Salami, outlined the overall plan for the Ila road dualisation, which includes a total of 10 kilometres divided into three phases. The first and second phases each cover 3.5 kilometres, while the third phase spans three kilometres. The governor has mandated that the entire project be completed within 12 months, with the expectation that the final phase will be finished before the end of his tenure. However, the unveiling of the Ila-Orangun road coincided with controversy over another infrastructure project, the Lameco Flyover in Osogbo. Less than a month after its official commissioning, the flyover was closed due to a structural defect discovered on the bridge. One lane was cordoned off, and videos circulating online showed visible cracks on sections of the bridge. The closure sparked a political debate, with the Accord Party alleging sabotage and the All Progressives Congress (APC) questioning the quality of the construction. Victor Akande, the Osun State Chairman of the Accord Party, claimed that the party had received reports of a "disturbing pattern of vandalisation targeting public infrastructure delivered by the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke." He accused the APC of attempting to undermine the achievements of the current administration ahead of the upcoming governorship election. Akande urged security agencies to investigate the matter thoroughly and prosecute anyone found responsible, regardless of their political affiliations. On the other hand, the APC denied the sabotage claims, asserting that preliminary findings indicated structural deficiencies in the flyover. The APC's Media and Publicity Director, Remi Omowaiye, stated that there were confirmed reports of "visible signs of structural failure," including a deep pothole and other distress points that raised serious concerns about the quality of construction and the integrity of the project. The APC called for an independent structural integrity assessment and advised motorists to avoid using the flyover until it was deemed safe. Governor Adeleke responded to the controversy by inspecting the damaged section of the Lameco Flyover alongside engineers from the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure. He described the incident as an act of vandalism aimed at undermining his administration's infrastructure projects. Adeleke commended the engineers for their swift response and directed security agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible for the damage. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works, Bashiru Bello, dismissed claims of structural failure, suggesting that the flyover had been deliberately vandalized. Engineers discovered two drilled holes that had been blocked with pieces of cloth, preventing water from draining properly. Bello stated that the asphalt thickness measured 120–125 millimetres, exceeding the 100-millimetre specification for the project. As tensions escalated, the Accord Party and the Police Command exchanged accusations regarding the neutrality of security agencies in the state. Pastor Victor Akande accused the Osun Police Command of providing cover for suspected thugs, while members of rival groups faced harassment and selective arrests. Akande urged the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, to conduct an impartial investigation into the activities of all individuals linked to the recent violence in the state. DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, the Police Public Relations Officer, refuted the allegations, emphasizing the police's commitment to professionalism, impartiality, and the rule of law. He stated that arrests were based on credible evidence rather than media reports or political statements. Some suspects had confessed to planning to procure arms and ammunition to commit further acts of violence.
