Nigeria and Germany have agreed to strengthen their business and trade relations during a high-level diplomatic visit in Abuja. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul concluded a two-day trip to Nigeria on Wednesday, marking his third visit to the country this year. The discussions focused on expanding economic collaboration, particularly in emerging sectors such as information technology, startups, and critical industries like pharmaceuticals and renewable energy. Bilateral trade between the two nations saw a 10 percent increase last year, according to Wadephul. During meetings in Abuja, Wadephul met with Nigerian Foreign Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu. The talks took place following a day in Lagos, where the German delegation explored economic opportunities in Nigeria’s dynamic market. Claudia Roth, a member of the Green Party and part of the delegation, emphasized the need for new international partnerships in light of geopolitical shifts. She criticized leaders like former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin for destabilizing global trade and security structures. The European Union faces mounting pressures from both U.S. trade policies and rising tensions with China and Russia. While the U.S. has shifted toward protectionism, Europe continues to grapple with challenges posed by Chinese trade practices and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Meanwhile, China and Russia have deepened their influence in African markets through strategic investments and security alliances. Despite these dynamics, Wadephul expressed optimism about the future of the German-Nigerian economic relationship, noting that the partnership still holds substantial untapped potential. President Muhammadu Bola Tinubu’s administration has implemented sweeping economic reforms aimed at revitalizing Nigeria’s financial system. These include liberalizing the naira exchange rate, restructuring the tax code, and eliminating a long-standing fuel subsidy. While these measures have drawn praise from economists and investors, they have also led to short-term inflationary pressures. Wadephul acknowledged the progress made under Tinubu’s leadership, highlighting the government’s efforts to stabilize the economy and attract foreign investment. Security concerns remain a key focus of the bilateral dialogue. Wadephul praised Nigeria for its role in combating terrorism, especially in the northeastern region where jihadist groups have been active since 2009. He warned of the risk of cross-border violence spilling into neighboring countries in the Sahel region. However, his commitment to security and humanitarian cooperation coincides with a broader decline in Western foreign aid. Germany, like other European nations, has faced repeated cuts to its aid budgets, despite the urgent needs of regions affected by conflict and displacement. Roth underscored the importance of maintaining humanitarian support, particularly in countries like Mauritania, where the German delegation visited earlier in the week. She noted the large number of refugees arriving from Mali due to instability in the Sahel. “We are not coming from the north and educating people,” she stated, “but we are coming and saying… ‘we do not know anything better, we have to learn from you.’” This sentiment reflects a shift in Germany’s approach to Africa, emphasizing mutual learning rather than traditional donor roles. As part of his ongoing tour of Africa, Wadephul will travel to South Africa on Thursday. His visit underscores Germany’s continued interest in strengthening regional partnerships and addressing shared challenges, from economic development to security threats. The German delegation’s engagement with Nigeria highlights the growing significance of Africa in shaping global trade and political strategies amid shifting power balances.
