The world's most powerful solar telescope has captured images revealing intricate whirls hidden on the Sun’s surface. These swirling patterns, known as Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities, have long been theorized by scientists but had never before been directly observed. The discovery was made using the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, located on the island of Maui in Hawaii, which boasts a four-meter mirror capable of resolving features far smaller than previously possible. The observations were conducted in April 2025, focusing on a magnetically active region near a sunspot. Scientists analyzing high-resolution data found distinct whirls forming at the boundaries where faster plasma moved against slower plasma along magnetic lines. This phenomenon, similar to ocean waves or cloud formations, occurs where two fluids move at different speeds, creating spiraling patterns. Dr. David Kuridze, a solar physicist with the National Solar Observatory, expressed surprise at the sheer number of these whirls. “We were genuinely amazed by the incredible amount of detail and dynamic activity visible in the high-resolution footage,” he said. He noted that the whirls were not isolated occurrences but appeared frequently across the magnetic surface. “What truly astonished us was their frequency. We did not expect them to be so widespread.” To confirm their findings, researchers compared the visual data with detailed computer simulations of solar plasma behavior. These simulations replicated the same patterns, showing that such instabilities regularly occur at the edges of magnetic structures and surrounding convection zones. Dr. Friedrich Wöger, another solar physicist at the observatory, emphasized the significance of this confirmation. “Proving that something looks, moves, and behaves like a duck is indeed a duck is much more challenging,” he remarked. He added that the verification was possible due to the unprecedented spatial resolution of the telescope and highly detailed simulations specifically designed for this study. The discovery could help scientists better understand how energy is transported from the Sun’s surface into its upper atmosphere. If these whirls are indeed widespread along magnetic boundaries, they might continuously mix plasma and magnetic fields, potentially playing a role in heating the Sun’s corona and triggering powerful eruptions. One of the greatest mysteries in solar physics is why the corona, the outer layer of the Sun’s atmosphere, is significantly hotter than its visible surface. The Inouye telescope was built precisely to investigate small magnetic structures linked to solar flares and space weather. Space weather events, such as solar flares and coronal mass ejections, can disrupt satellite operations, communication systems, GPS navigation, and power grids on Earth. “Modern society relies heavily on technologies sensitive to space weather,” said Dr. Wöger. “To better understand and eventually predict the most destructive solar behavior, we must first grasp the small physical processes that drive it.” Researchers believe the newly discovered whirls represent just one part of a broader picture of how the Sun functions. Their findings have been published in the journal Nature.
