South Korea’s Korea Biotechnology Industry Organization (KoreaBIO) has expressed interest in deepening biotechnology collaborations with Taiwan during the BIO Asia-Taiwan 2026 conference, which took place in Taipei from July 15 to 19. The organization emphasized the potential for expanded partnerships in areas such as biopharmaceutical manufacturing, digital health, and startup investment. During the event, KoreaBIO co-hosted a dedicated session focused on showcasing South Korea’s biotech landscape and promoting open innovation between the two regions. Jurie Hwang, director of public and international affairs at KoreaBIO, led a discussion titled “Why Korea, Why Now? Emerging Investment & Partnership Opportunities in Korea Biotech” during the “Regional Collaboration Forum-Korea Session.” Hwang highlighted the shared strengths of South Korea and Taiwan in information technology, semiconductors, and digital healthcare. She argued that strategic cooperation could generate new growth opportunities for both sides. Following this session, another panel discussion titled “Can Korea & Taiwan Build the Next Asian Biotech Growth Hub Together?” featured representatives from biotech firms and investors based in both countries. They explored possibilities for cross-border collaboration, emphasizing mutual benefits beyond traditional perceptions. Portia Lin, senior vice president of EirGenix, a contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) based in Taiwan, noted that while Korean companies frequently regard Taiwan’s CDMO industry as a cost-effective production hub, they often overlook the region’s high-quality technical workforce and advanced capabilities. Steven Chen, senior business development manager at Health2Sync, a Taiwanese digital healthcare firm, presented examples of successful joint ventures with Korean counterparts, illustrating existing synergies between the two markets. During the general session of the conference, Hwang introduced the idea of establishing an Early-Stage Cross-Border Syndicate Platform. This initiative aims to facilitate information exchange and attract collective investments among early-stage startups across Asia. Such a platform would support emerging enterprises by linking them with potential partners and funding sources. In addition to participating in discussions, KoreaBIO maintained a promotional presence throughout the exhibition. Their efforts were aimed at drawing attention to BIOPLUS-INTERPHEX Korea 2026, an upcoming event that promises to bring together global biopharmaceutical players and innovative startups. According to Hwang, these activities underscore KoreaBIO’s commitment to acting as a central networking hub, enabling Korean companies to better engage with the global value chain. Throughout the conference, multiple sessions and presentations underscored the growing interest in fostering stronger ties between South Korea and Taiwan within the biotechnology sector. Discussions ranged from practical aspects of collaboration to broader visions for regional development.
