Italia paga millones por frescos etruscos: 'Este es nuestro patrimonio cultural'

The Italian state has purchased Etruscan frescoes from a tomb dating back at least 2300 years for 15 million euros. These frescoes, part of the François Tomb discovered in 1857 by archaeologist Alessandro François, are among the best-preserved works of the Etruscans, an advanced civilization that preceded the Romans in central Italy. The tomb, located in the city of Vulci, was a center of Etruscan power and features scenes combining Greek mythology with Etruscan history, including the sacrifice of Trojan captives by Achilles and the liberation of an Etruscan nobleman by Mastarna, who was later known as Servius Tullius, the sixth legendary king of Rome. The frescoes provide rare insight into conflicts between local rivals and depict Etruscan heroes killing their enemies. According to Luana Toniolo, head of the National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia in Rome, these frescoes offer a unique glimpse into Etruscan culture, highlighting their influence on early Roman religion, urban life, and the emancipation of women compared to Greek and Roman societies.
