Indonesia looks beyond UPI, eyes India's digital blueprint

Indonesia is planning to integrate with India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and adopt aspects of India's digital public infrastructure to build its own sovereign digital ecosystem. This includes developing interoperable platforms for commerce, digital identity, and public services that could later be shared within ASEAN. The collaboration is expected to be a focus during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Indonesia. Indonesia is studying India's public policy models, such as the Public Distribution System (PDS) and PM POSHAN, to improve its own programs like the Free Nutritious Meals initiative and healthcare access. The partnership also involves defense manufacturing, technology transfer, and the creation of a cross-border payment system via UPI-QRIS, aimed at simplifying transactions for Indian tourists and boosting trade.
