After leading the box office for two weeks in July, it fell to fourth place in daily ticket sales. With approximately 4.3 million admissions recorded as of Thursday, the film appears unlikely to meet the financial targets necessary for profitability. Despite its massive budget of $33 million, making it the most expensive Korean film ever produced, it seems to have lost its grip on the market. Despite the challenges faced by some high-profile titles, the overall performance of Korean cinema has remained robust. The first half of the year marked the best results for the industry since the onset of the pandemic, fueled by the runaway success of "The King's Warden," a historical drama that became the highest-grossing Korean film of all time. Other notable entries included "Colony," a zombie thriller by Yeon Sang-ho, and the low-budget horror film "Salmokji: Whispering Water," both of which contributed positively to the box office figures. As of Thursday, ticket sales for the entire year totaled 71.7 million, representing almost 70% of the previous year’s total. This indicates a healthy trajectory for the industry, even amid the current dominance of Hollywood films. Now, the focus turns to the upcoming fall schedule, which promises to be the most packed in recent memory. The fall season begins with the release of "The Intern," a remake of Nancy Meyers' 2015 comedy. Starring Choi Min-sik in the role originally played by Robert De Niro, the film is set to open on September 16. Directed by Kim Do-young, who previously directed the successful romantic drama "Once We Were Us," the film is expected to draw a wide audience given its recognizable cast and familiar storyline. Following "The Intern," the cinematic landscape will see the debut of "Possible Love," a long-awaited feature from acclaimed director Lee Chang-dong. This Netflix original, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, will receive a theatrical release starting September 23. The film features a stellar cast including Jeon Do-yeon, Sul Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung, and Cho Yeo-jeong, portraying two married couples whose lives intersect during a documentary project. September also marks the arrival of "The Assassin(s)," a political thriller directed by veteran filmmaker Hur Jin-ho. Set against the backdrop of the 1974 assassination attempt, the film explores themes of power and morality, offering yet another compelling entry to the fall lineup.
