The regional Civil Protection agency has condemned the practice, calling it the work of a criminal mind. According to Domenico Costarella, director general of Civil Protection, the fires were set using cats tied with cloth soaked in flammable liquid and then launched into fields. These methods, described as inhumane, have been found in multiple locations, including the Pollino National Park and areas near the historic Convent of the Capuchins in Morano. The situation has escalated rapidly, with over 164 fires recorded within the last 24 hours and another 26 still active. Firefighters are working tirelessly to contain the blazes, which have spread through dry vegetation fueled by recent heatwaves. In some cases, the flames have approached historical sites and agricultural land confiscated from the 'ndrangheta, a powerful organized crime group. This land was later assigned to the cooperative Valle del Marro - Libera Terra. The fires have consumed centuries-old olive groves, raising concerns among local communities and environmental groups. Behind these fires lies a pattern of deliberate sabotage. Costarella revealed that many of the fires were set using delayed ignition methods, such as candles with flammable cloths or Molotov cocktails. These tactics, he explained, are not only cruel but also indicate a calculated effort to cause widespread destruction. Among the most shocking discoveries were cats tied with soaked cloth and released into fields to help spread the fire. The animals, reportedly tortured before being thrown into the flames, were found charred and partially intact among the ashes. The discovery has sparked outrage, with the AIDAa (Italian Association for the Defense of Animals and Environment) announcing plans to file formal complaints against those responsible. They have also offered a reward of one thousand euros to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest and conviction of individuals using animals to ignite fires. This initiative aims to encourage public cooperation in identifying and prosecuting those behind these acts of arson. Firefighters have documented over 200 interventions in just three days, highlighting the scale of the crisis. The affected areas span all provinces in Calabria, with major incidents reported in the Pollino National Park, Squillace Lido, Sant’Eufemia di Lamezia Terme, Cassano allo Ionio, and Acri. In Cassano allo Ionio, the mayor, Gianpaolo Iacobini, reported that a large fire had started in the San Nicola area, threatening homes and businesses. Emergency crews are deployed across the region, with aerial support from state firefighting aircraft used in the most complex situations. As the battle against the fires continues, officials emphasize the need for a cultural shift in how such crimes are addressed. Costarella’s remarks underscore the gravity of the issue, warning that the worst enemy of humanity is humanity itself.
