Former Newcastle Mayor, MEC and ANC KZN MPL Dr Mahlaba killed in jogging accident

Dr Nkululeko Ntuthuko Mahlaba, a prominent figure in the African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal, passed away on Saturday after being struck by a vehicle while jogging in Newcastle. The incident occurred during his regular morning exercise routine, and despite immediate medical attention, Mahlaba succumbed to his injuries. His death has been described by the ANC as a profound and devastating loss, not just to the province but to the broader liberation movement in South Africa.

Mahlaba, who was set to turn 45 on August 23, had a multifaceted career spanning politics, public service, and healthcare. At the time of his death, he was serving as a Member of the ANC Provincial Task Team, a Member of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, and the Chairperson of Committees—often referred to as the Chair of Chairs. His roles underscored his deep involvement in both legislative processes and the strategic direction of the ANC in the region. Prior to these positions, Mahlaba had served as the Executive Mayor of Newcastle Local Municipality and as the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture, as well as Public Works and Human Settlements. These roles highlighted his commitment to infrastructure development, community upliftment, and governance.

Mahlaba’s contributions to the ANC were extensive. He had held several senior leadership positions within the party, including regional chairperson of the Mbuso Kubheka Region, former provincial treasurer, and former chairperson of the ANC Youth League in KwaZulu-Natal. His leadership helped strengthen the ANC's presence in northern KwaZulu-Natal, where he was instrumental in advancing the party's agenda and fostering grassroots engagement. As a medical doctor, Mahlaba balanced his professional responsibilities with his political duties, using his expertise to serve communities through public healthcare and socio-economic development initiatives. In May, he completed a Master of Commerce in Leadership Studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, further enhancing his capacity to lead and innovate in both sectors.

The ANC expressed deep sorrow over Mahlaba’s passing, stating that the news had cast a “dark, painful, and impenetrable cloud” over the province and the liberation movement. The party emphasized that Mahlaba’s life was characterized by vigor, promise, and revolutionary commitment, and his absence would be deeply felt. ANC KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson Sifiso Sonjica paid tribute to Mahlaba, calling him a “revolutionary doctor,” a “fearless youth leader,” and a “disciplined cadre.” Sonjica noted that Mahlaba’s dedication to both medicine and public service made him a unique figure in the ANC, capable of healing both the physical ailments of the people and addressing the socio-economic challenges faced by communities.

The ANC also acknowledged Mahlaba’s significant impact on local government and provincial administration. His leadership as the Executive Mayor of Newcastle Local Municipality and later as a provincial MEC left an enduring legacy in infrastructure development and community upliftment. His role as Chair of Chairs in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature showcased his commitment to accountability and good governance, ensuring that the interests of the citizens were prioritized in legislative processes.

The ANC extended its condolences to Mahlaba’s family, including his wife, Dr Busi Mahlaba, their children, and close associates. They urged the public and media to respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time. The party also received messages of condolence from other political entities such as the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), Democratic Alliance (DA), and ActionSA, reflecting the widespread recognition of Mahlaba’s contributions to public life.
