Former deputy bureau chief of The Guardian, Anietie Akpan, has passed away. He died on Sunday night, according to the Cross River State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ). A veteran journalist and publisher, Mr Akpan dedicated more than three decades to the profession, becoming well-known for his investigative work on public affairs and child rights. After leaving The Guardian, he founded his own publication, Pillartoday.com.ng. His death has been described as a “monumental loss” to the journalism community and the state of Cross River. Born into a region known for its vibrant media landscape, Mr Akpan built a career spanning over three decades, primarily based in Cross River and neighboring Akwa Ibom states. He was celebrated for his tenacity in uncovering stories and mentoring emerging journalists. The article, released on 30 July, detailed the recent landslide in Calabar caused by heavy rains. The byline read: “By Anietie Akpan, from his sick bed with assistance by his wife, Imaobong, daughter Etinyene and neighbour Idongesit Otoobong.” This unusual signature highlighted his resolve to continue contributing to the field even while battling illness. Linus Obogo, the governor’s spokesperson for Cross River State, expressed deep respect for Mr Akpan’s legacy.
