Musk's emphasis on AI, robotaxis, and autonomous driving technologies has grown significantly over the years, reaching approximately 50% of his remarks in recent calls, compared to 15% to 20% in 2022. During the Q1 2024 earnings call, Musk explicitly stated that viewing Tesla solely as an automobile manufacturer is an incorrect valuation model. He argued that investors who doubt Tesla's ability to achieve full autonomy should reconsider their investment in the company. This perspective aligns with Musk's broader vision of positioning Tesla as a leader in AI and robotics rather than merely a carmaker. The shift in focus became evident after Tesla introduced the Optimus humanoid robot in 2021. Initially, Musk devoted minimal time, around 2% or less, to discussing the project. However, in the past year, he has allocated at least 10% of his speaking time to Optimus, with the topic accounting for nearly a third of his focus during the Q3 2025 call. This increase coincides with a slowdown in growth within Tesla's core automotive business, prompting Musk to redirect his attention toward emerging technologies. Other Tesla executives, such as Chief Financial Officer Vaibhav Taneja and Vice President of Engineering Lars Moravy, have shown a slower transition in their focus areas. While they have gradually reduced their emphasis on the automotive sector, they continue to allocate around 30% of their time on earnings calls to discussions about vehicles, with AI, robotaxis, and Full Self-Driving technologies comprising their next most frequent topics. Their approach contrasts with Musk's fervent advocacy for AI and robotics, which has not yet yielded substantial financial returns. The change in focus among Tesla's leadership reflects broader challenges faced by the automotive division, including heightened competition from traditional automakers and new entrants from China. These pressures have led to a noticeable decline in the proportion of time dedicated to car manufacturing and sales, particularly evident in recent earnings calls. Despite this, the executives maintain a positive outlook on the future, echoing Musk's ambitious projections. On the Q2 2025 earnings call, Taneja emphasized the importance of bold investments in achieving long-term success, stating that progress would be nonlinear and the future promising. His comments reflect a shared optimism among Tesla's leadership regarding the potential of AI and robotics to drive the company's future growth, despite the current lack of tangible returns from these initiatives.
