A new exhibition at the Haus der Natur in Salzburg offers visitors a closer look at Europasaurus, a species of dwarf dinosaur that once roamed the islands of Europe during the Late Jurassic period, around 154 million years ago. This is the first time the exhibit has been shown in Austria, showcasing one of the most remarkable paleontological discoveries of recent decades. The display includes the skeleton of Europasaurus, which stands at just three meters tall, six to eight meters long, and weighed up to a ton, making it unusually small compared to other sauropods found in North America. The discovery was made on September 29, 1998, by amateur paleontologist Holger Lüdtke, who had spent his life searching for fossils among rocks. While examining limestone in the Langenberg quarry near Goslar, he found a small tooth that hinted at the significance of the find. At the time, there were no known similar specimens in Europe. Lüdtke quickly brought the fossil to respected scientists, drawing attention to this newly identified species. Over the years, excavations in the quarry uncovered more than 1,500 bones from at least 21 individuals of all ages, making it the only known site where Europasaurus remains have been found. These include juvenile, adult, and even baby dinosaurs. According to curator Anka Müller, the herd likely died together, though the exact cause of their demise remains unknown. Several theories exist, including a sudden flood or lightning strike. The evidence suggests they may have perished simultaneously during a natural disaster. The exhibition also features reconstructions of feathered dinosaurs, providing further insight into the diversity of prehistoric life. Researchers believe that large predators, such as theropod dinosaurs, may have invaded the habitat of Europasaurus. Fossilized footprints found in the quarry suggest two different species of theropods hunted these smaller sauropods. Scientists speculate that falling sea levels allowed these predators access to the island where Europasaurus lived, potentially marking the end of the specialized island dwarves. The discovery highlights the crucial role of amateur paleontologists in uncovering significant finds. Robert Lindner, director of the Haus der Natur, emphasized the importance of enthusiasts who pursue their passion with dedication. Without their contributions, many collections would lack the depth and breadth they currently possess. The museum has incorporated several pieces from private collections into its displays, underscoring the collaborative nature of scientific discovery. The exhibition provides a rare opportunity to see the complete skeleton of Europasaurus, along with related artifacts and reconstructions, offering a glimpse into the unique evolutionary adaptations of these dwarf dinosaurs.
