She explained that while parrots are often admired for their intelligence, ability to repeat words, and mimicry skills, they have complex emotional and cognitive needs that are frequently overlooked. Mora de Aragón pointed out that one of the main misconceptions is believing parrots can entertain themselves for long periods without interaction. In an interview with La Vanguardia, she stated that these birds need daily quality interaction, continuous stimuli, and a stable routine. The lack of such conditions can lead to depression and behavioral issues among parrots. The specialist highlighted that the relationship with a parrot involves more than just providing food and space. She noted that many people fail to recognize the long-term commitment required, as some species can live up to 90 years. This means keeping a parrot is not a temporary decision but a lifelong responsibility. According to Mora de Aragón, the ability of parrots to speak or imitate sounds is just a small part of their overall complexity. While this trait often draws attention, it does not reflect the full range of their abilities or needs. Behind this behavior lies an intelligent creature with specific requirements for physical and mental well-being. She warned that when people focus solely on the impressive traits of parrots, they tend to ignore the essential elements needed to keep them healthy. When the image people have of a parrot doesn’t match the actual animal, problems arise. The veterinarian further described how parrots demonstrate their intelligence through everyday situations. They learn routines, recognize individuals, and even anticipate events before they happen. Their communication extends beyond vocalizations to include sophisticated body language. However, this high level of cognition also brings greater responsibilities for caretakers. A parrot’s mind must remain engaged through exploration, play, and meaningful interactions. Without these opportunities, frustration can manifest in excessive screaming, destruction of objects, or self-directed behaviors. Finally, Mora de Aragón stressed that intelligence itself is not the root cause of problematic behaviors in parrots. Instead, the issue arises when caregivers fail to respond appropriately to the bird's needs.
