A 20-year-old running back for William Jewell College in Missouri, MicahJo Barnett, died Saturday after experiencing a medical emergency during the team's season opener, according to school officials. The incident occurred at Greene Stadium in Liberty, Missouri, during a game against Fort Lewis College. The game was postponed following the tragedy. Barnett, a junior majoring in business administration, collapsed on the sideline moments after scoring a touchdown in the first quarter. Paramedics were called to the scene, and he was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Neither William Jewell athletics nor the NCAA has disclosed the exact cause of his death. Both institutions issued statements expressing their condolences and mourning the loss. Barnett was a native of Liberty, where William Jewell's campus is located. During his high school years at Liberty North High School, he helped lead the team to a state championship. In his senior year, he recorded 1,450 all-purpose yards and 20 touchdowns. At the collegiate level, he started five games in the 2025 season before sustaining a season-ending injury. Last season, he led the Cardinals with 366 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Teammates described Barnett as a dedicated and inspirational figure. Jayshawn Richmond, a fellow player, shared that Barnett's final act on the field was scoring a touchdown, which he did moments before his untimely death. “He scored like, right before his final moments,” Richmond told KMBC-TV. “And we’re just going to continue on where he started.” Teammates noted that Barnett was a hometown hero, someone they could always rely on for support and encouragement. The campus community was deeply affected by the tragedy. A candlelight vigil was held on the college quad Saturday night, drawing together students, faculty, and members of the local community. William Jewell Vice President for Athletics Ryan Erlacher praised Barnett as an “exceptional young man who made a tremendous impact.” The event served as a moment of reflection and solidarity amid the grief. Liberty Police Captain Nathan Mulch confirmed that medical personnel were immediately available when Barnett collapsed. Despite their efforts, he could not be revived. The rapid response from emergency services was acknowledged by university leaders, including Dr. Dave Van Horn, who expressed gratitude for the swift assistance from local authorities and healthcare providers. Fort Lewis College also extended its condolences, with Athletic Director Shawn Jakubowski offering support to the William Jewell community. “Our hearts are with [MicahJo’s] family, friends, teammates, coaches, and everyone at William Jewell during this incredibly difficult time,” Jakubowski stated. Counseling resources were made available to the Fort Lewis football team to provide ongoing support. Barnett is survived by his six siblings and his parents. His academic achievements included being named a 2025-26 Academic All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honoree.
