The article reports on the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service (HGSS) expressing strong opposition to the idea of charging tourists for rescue operations, warning that this could lead to the worst possible scenario. HGSS highlights that many visitors underestimate the dangers of hiking, often starting their journey without sufficient water, equipment, or terrain assessment. They emphasize that the solution should focus on prevention and education rather than financial barriers. The service notes that while there is a perception that most rescued individuals are foreign tourists, statistical data show that approximately 75% of those helped are Croatian citizens. HGSS operates through 25 stations across Croatia, employing around 1200 volunteers who work unpaid. They stress that delaying emergency assistance due to fear of costs could be dangerous, and that prevention and public awareness remain the best tools for reducing risks.

To uključuje razvijanje aktivnog i pustolovnog turizma, povećanje broja posjeta planinama, rijecima, kanjonima, špiljama i drugim nepristupačnim područjima, a ekstremniji vremenski uvjeti dodatno kompliciraju situaciju. U HGSS-u oko 1200 članova, svi rade bez naknade.

U sklopu svog posla, služba koristi tehnologiju kao dopunu ljudskog rada: dronove, termalne kamere, GPS uređaje, digitalne karte, komunikacijske sustave i aplikacije.
