Over 1,200 residents have been evacuated from affected areas as firefighters in both France and Spain continue battling wildfires. The situation has intensified north of Madrid, Spain’s capital, where a forest fire is spreading rapidly. According to regional authorities in Castile-La Mancha, the area burned has more than doubled since yesterday, reaching 260 square kilometers. This marks one of the worst wildfires in the region's history, according to regional leader Emiliano García-Page. The fire, which has been raging since Thursday northeast of Madrid, has consumed approximately 26,000 hectares, equivalent to around 36,000 football fields. Strong winds have fueled the flames, pushing them forward at speeds of up to four kilometers per hour. Despite these challenges, emergency services have managed to prevent the fire from spreading into populated areas. Around 1,200 people from thirty threatened villages have been evacuated, with additional reinforcements deployed to combat the blaze. Firefighters have been using heavy machinery to create firebreaks and contain the spread of the flames. Over 45 aerial units, including helicopters and aircraft, have been deployed to assist in firefighting efforts. These operations have helped keep the fire from reaching nearby communities. However, officials warn that the situation could worsen due to an approaching heatwave, with temperatures expected to reach above 40 degrees Celsius. The conditions that led to the fire were partly due to the unusually high rainfall during the winter and early spring, which promoted rapid growth of grasses and underbrush. Now, this vegetation is drying out under intense summer heat, acting as kindling for the fires. With another heatwave forecast starting Tuesday, the risk of further escalation is considered high. In France, similar concerns have emerged in the mountainous region near Saint-Tropez. A vegetation fire that broke out on Sunday destroyed four houses and 15 vehicles. Local reports indicate that over 360 firefighters were involved in extinguishing the blaze, aided by aerial support. They succeeded in preventing the fire from spreading to an additional hundred homes. The incident caused disruptions to rail traffic, with a high-speed train carrying 800 passengers forced to stop at a small station due to impassable tracks. National weather service Météo France has issued warnings for increased wildfire risks across 27 departments in France. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez told radio station France Inter that nearly 40,000 hectares of natural land have already been damaged by fires this year, significantly exceeding figures from previous years or even the particularly fire-prone year of 2022. Authorities have also arrested 111 individuals suspected of arson, with most admitting to the accusations.
