The smuggling operation involved loading the migrants into a Conex shipping container aboard a stationary Union Pacific train in Del Rio. The container lacked ventilation or cooling systems, and the ambient temperature reached the low 90s Fahrenheit during the trip. Prosecutors claim that the smugglers used bolt cutters to break the lock on the container and load the migrants inside. The container was then sealed shut, preventing the migrants from escaping. The train proceeded eastward toward San Antonio, where the smugglers allegedly discovered the migrants suffering from severe heat exhaustion and dehydration. One of the migrants was left for dead near the tracks, and the others were relocked inside the container before the train continued its journey to Laredo. Upon arrival in Laredo, a worker at the Union Pacific Rail Yard noticed a leg protruding from the container and discovered the bodies of six individuals inside. Among the victims were four Mexican nationals and three Honduran nationals, with one of them being a 14-year-old child. Authorities confirmed that one of the migrants managed to send a desperate message to a family member while still alive, pleading for assistance. The cause of death for the victims was attributed to hyperthermia, or heat stroke, based on findings by the Webb County medical examiner. The indictment also notes that the container was stacked atop another container, making it impossible for the migrants to exit from the inside. The 11 defendants face charges of conspiracy to transport illegal aliens resulting in death and aiding and abetting such transportation. If convicted, each defendant faces a potential life sentence. Among the accused, Karina Garcia, 37, of Del Rio, and Seferino Huerta-Casillas, 35, of Mexico, remain at large. Other arrests have taken place, including Mayra Alejandra Huerta, 32, of Del Rio, who was detained on May 12 on charges related to harboring illegal aliens. Additional charges were brought against her, and two more defendants were arrested over several days in central and southern Texas. The U.S. Attorney’s Office noted that the case highlights the dangers associated with using rail transport for smuggling activities. The indictment also references previous incidents involving similar methods, including the 2022 case where 53 migrants died in a tractor-trailer, and the 2023 incident in Knippa, Texas, where two individuals were found dead among 17 others in rail cars.
