SME es publicado por Petit Press, a.s. Desde 2021 el accionista controlador es el Prvá slovenská investičná skupina (PSIS), dirigido por el empresario eslovaco Ondrej Rybár, junto con la administración; ese año el grupo financiero Penta vendió la participación del 40-45% que había mantenido desde 2014, terminando con años de propiedad parcial impugnada. Penta nunca obtuvo el control mayoritario, y su salida devolvió el control total a PSIS/Petit Press.

SME se financia mediante una combinación de ventas de impresión, una suscripción digital / paywall (sme.sk) y publicidad; es un periódico comercial sin subsidio estatal o de partido.
Afiliación y postura
SME fue fundada en 1993 por periodistas que se separaron del diario Smena bajo presión política, y es un periódico liberal de centro-izquierda que a menudo critica a los gobiernos populistas. Cuando Penta entró en 2014, parte del personal se fue para fundar Denník N por preocupaciones de independencia, pero Penta ha salido por completo y la editorial ahora está controlada por un grupo de inversión privado sin participación partidista o estatal.
