Zoox launches commercial service in Las Vegas

Zoox, a subsidiary of Amazon, has begun offering commercial rides in Las Vegas using driverless taxis. Previously, passengers could ride for free, but starting August 10, they will need to pay fares based on distance and duration, plus a base fee. The service required a special exemption from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) because Zoox vehicles lack traditional steering wheels and pedals, unlike conventional autonomous vehicles used by competitors like Waymo and Tesla. With this approval, Zoox can now expand its fleet, building up to 2,500 new robotaxis over the next two years. Founded in 2014, Zoox has been operating in Las Vegas and San Francisco since late 2023 and plans to expand to Austin, Texas, and Miami, Florida.
