An 11-year-old Canadian boy died from rabies after a bat landed on his face while he was sleeping at a cottage in Ontario. The incident occurred during a family vacation in 2024. Initially, the family did not seek immediate medical attention because there were no visible injuries, and they believed the bat’s behavior was normal. However, 19 days later, the boy developed facial swelling and paralysis. He was taken to the emergency room multiple times, where doctors initially suspected viral infections like Bell’s palsy. His condition rapidly worsened, leading to hospitalization on a pediatric intensive care unit. Tests confirmed rabies, and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency identified the strain as typical for bats. The boy passed away 17 days after being admitted to the hospital. Rabies cases are rare in Canada, with only 28 deaths recorded since 1924. Slovenia has been free of rabies in humans since 1950, with the last animal case confirmed in 2013.

Netopirji so naravni rezervoarji številnih virusov, vključno z virusom stekline.

Okužbe s steklino so v Kanadi redke.

V Kanadi so, denimo, od leta 1924 našteli 28 smrtnih

He woke up with a bat on his face, then died of typhoid.

A boy in northern Ontario was bitten by a bat during a camping trip in 2024. Initially, he showed no visible bite wounds, and the bat was released after being caught in a pot. The boy later developed symptoms such as tingling, stiffness on the right side of his face, swelling, loss of appetite, and difficulty swallowing. He was initially treated for Bell’s palsy but was later hospitalized due to worsening conditions, including fever, confusion, hallucinations, and speech difficulties. After being admitted to the intensive care unit, doctors suspected rabies, which was confirmed four days later. Despite treatment, the boy died 17 days after hospitalization. Rabies, caused by a virus in the Rhabdoviridae family, is almost always fatal if not treated immediately after exposure.

An 11-year-old boy died after being exposed to rabies through a bat during a family camping trip in Canada. The bat sat on his face while he was sleeping, and although the parents initially did not seek medical attention, the boy developed severe symptoms three weeks later, including swelling, fever, hallucinations, and loss of sensation on one side of his face. He was hospitalized and placed on a ventilator but eventually succumbed to the disease. Rabies is rare in developed countries due to successful vaccination programs, but remains a significant cause of death in parts of Africa and Asia. In Slovenia, urban rabies has been eradicated since the 1940s, with the last human fatality recorded in 1950.

Bias read (Center): The article presents a factual account of a rabies case without overtly favoring any political perspective. It includes information from official sources and provides context on rabies prevalence globally and in Slovenia, maintaining neutrality in tone and framing.
