SB19, the popular Filipino pop group, has recently been appointed as one of the Philippines' official tourism ambassadors, marking another milestone in its ongoing efforts to promote Filipino culture globally. This announcement came from the Department of Tourism (DOT) on Sunday, July 26, highlighting the group's role as "one of the country’s finest representatives of Filipino culture." The five-member group, Pablo, Stell, Ken, Josh, and Justin, has long been celebrated for their music and cultural influence, both within the Philippines and internationally. The group's designation follows a series of cultural and artistic endeavors that have solidified their position as influential figures in promoting Filipino identity. Their music, including hits such as "GENTO," "DAM," and "MAPA," has resonated with audiences worldwide, breaking down language barriers and drawing international fans to the Philippines for live performances. These concerts have created opportunities for overseas fans to travel to the country, contributing to the nation's tourism industry. Tourism Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay emphasized how SB19's global following provides a unique platform to encourage visits to the Philippines. She noted that whether it's a Filipino-American traveling halfway across the world or a fan in nearby countries like Taiwan or Thailand, the group's concerts offer compelling reasons to visit the archipelago. This appointment aligns with upcoming major events, notably the group's planned 2026 performance at Lollapalooza in Chicago, making them the first Filipino act to perform at the renowned music festival. SB19 shares this ambassadorial role with another prominent P-pop group, BINI, who were appointed earlier in July. While specific plans for collaboration between the DOT and SB19 remain undisclosed, the partnership underscores the government's recognition of the group's cultural significance and potential to enhance the country's image abroad. In addition to their ambassadorial duties, SB19 is set to be honored at the SUDI National Awards, organized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). The ceremony, scheduled for Tuesday, July 28, celebrates notable contributions to the Filipino music scene. The term "SUDI," derived from the Ilokano language, means "renowned" or "celebrated." The event occurs every three years, and SB19 was previously recognized in 2022 alongside other distinguished artists like violinist Alfonso "Coke" Bolipata and veteran performers Gary Valenciano and Regine Velasquez. Their cultural advocacy extends beyond accolades. In October 2024, the Asian Institute of Journalism (AIJC) and NOW Group chairman Mel Velarde presented SB19 with replicas of the 1734 Murillo-Velarde Map. Known as the "mother of all Philippine maps," this historical document confirms the inclusion of Scarborough Shoal, or Bajo de Masinloc, in Philippine territory. The group received these replicas for their efforts in raising awareness through their music, particularly in the 2021 music video for their track "What?" Earlier in 2021, SB19 was also designated as the official youth ambassador by the NCCA and Sentro Rizal, a cultural center for overseas Filipinos established in 2011. This role aligned with the NCCA's mission to elevate Philippine arts and culture on the global stage, recognizing SB19's growing influence and dedication to cultural promotion. Beyond their formal roles, SB19 has used their platform to address local issues affecting Filipinos. One example is the release of their song "VISA," which critiques bureaucratic inefficiencies and challenges faced by citizens dealing with administrative processes. This demonstrates their commitment to using their public presence to highlight social concerns while continuing to celebrate and promote Filipino culture through their work.
