Ownership

GMA News Online is the digital news platform of GMA Network, Inc., one of the Philippines' two dominant free-to-air broadcasters, operated through subsidiary GMA New Media. GMA Network is a publicly listed company (since 2007) but remains controlled by three intermarried founding families: the Gozon, Jimenez and Duavit clans, whose combined holdings give them majority voting control. The network was founded in 1950 as Republic Broadcasting System and passed to Filipino owners Felipe Gozon, Menardo Jimenez and Gilberto Duavit Sr. in the 1970s.

Funding

GMA is financed commercially, primarily through television and digital advertising revenue, plus content licensing and other media operations; the online arm earns from digital ads. It is not state- or party-funded.

Affiliation & stance

GMA is a commercially run, family-controlled listed broadcaster with a generally centrist, mainstream editorial line and no formal party or government ownership. Because control rests with private commercial owners rather than a party or the state, it is INDEPENDENT.

The week in photos: August 8-14, 2026

During the week of August 8–14, 2026, severe weather caused by the southwest monsoon (habagat) affected regions in the Philippines, including Luzon and Western Visayas. On August 9, a deadly landslide in Baguio City killed five students and buried 13 people, damaging several homes. Heavy rainfall led to school closures for approximately 6.7 million students and delayed the Senate's impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte. On August 11, a broken trash trap in the Baclaran-Redemptorist Water Channel caused significant flooding and waste accumulation, requiring the removal of over 700 metric tons of debris. State auditor Xylene Mae del Campo testified that the Office of the Vice President used confidential funds for holiday activities. Legal disputes emerged on August 12 between prosecutors and defense lawyers during the impeachment trial, involving disagreements over document usage and questioning tactics.

Calumpit declares state of calamity

Calumpit, a town in Bulacan, Philippines, was declared under a state of calamity due to severe flooding that affected all 29 barangays. The flooding, exacerbated by high tides, heavy monsoon rains, and overflow from nearby dams, displaced over 154,961 people across 46,498 families. Local authorities attributed the crisis to both natural factors and inadequate infrastructure, noting that some flood mitigation projects initiated by former President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had not fully resolved recurring flood issues. The Ipo and Bustos Dams played a role in managing water flow, though their operations were adjusted to prevent further damage.

[OPINION] ‘Violence’ in video games is not the problem, their social features are

An opinion piece argues that the real issue with video games is not their violent content but the unregulated social features within gaming platforms, particularly those aimed at children. Following a school shooting in Zamboanga City, Philippine authorities and lawmakers have blamed video games like Roblox and first-person shooters, citing concerns over chat groups and other social interactions. However, the article notes that there is no strong scientific evidence linking violent video games to criminal behavior. Researchers from the Oxford Internet Institute and the American Psychological Association highlight the lack of conclusive data connecting such games to aggression or real-world violence. The author suggests that while the immediate reaction from officials is understandable, the focus should shift toward moderating the social aspects of these platforms and improving parental controls to ensure safer online experiences for children.

DPWH seeks P644-billion budget for 2027. How does it plan to spend it?

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in the Philippines is requesting a P643.95-billion budget for 2027, with the majority allocated to infrastructure development and flood management. The proposed budget includes P176.6 billion for road projects, P157.3 billion for supporting other government initiatives, and P103.5 billion for flood control. The DPWH has historically seen its proposed budgets exceed final approvals, and recent corruption scandals have led to reduced funding for flood projects. Central Luzon would receive the largest share of the budget, while the House appropriations committee will review the proposal.

Highlights: Day 14 of Sara Duterte impeachment trial | Aug. 11, 2026

On the 14th day of Vice President Sara Duterte's impeachment trial, Commission on Audit auditor Xylene Mae del Campo continued testifying about alleged misuse of confidential funds. The prosecution accused the defense of delaying the trial by postponing receipt comparisons until August 14, while private prosecutor Benjamin Tolosa warned of potential violations of the sub judice rule due to Duterte's public comments. Prosecution counsel Lorna Kapunan criticized the defense for ignoring meeting requests, and Presiding Officer Sen. Francis Escudero suggested the defense may have 'ghosted' the prosecution. Del Campo stated that activities like tree planting and Christmas parties listed by the Office of the Vice President (OVP) are not allowed uses of confidential funds. She also noted that some disbursements occurred before the allocated budget was accessed. Unusual payee names and resemblance to politicians were among the receipts examined.
