Vienna needs more water: EVN supplies eight surrounding communities

Vienna faces increasing water demand, prompting energy company EVN to step in and supply eight surrounding municipalities with its water resources. The affected communities, Brand-Laaben, Gablitz, Mauerbach, Neustift-Innermanzing, Purkersdorf, Pressbaum, Tullnerbach, and Wolfsgraben, have been relying on Vienna’s high-quality spring water for years. However, due to the current surge in water consumption within Vienna itself, which averages around 400,000 cubic meters per day but has recently risen to nearly 600,000, the supply must now shift to EVN's water. EVN spokesperson Stefan Zach confirmed that while some water will still come from Vienna, the majority will now be sourced from EVN’s network. The duration of this transition depends on developments over the coming days, though Zach emphasized that the supply situation remains secure, even if the current arrangement persists for some time. The affected municipalities are being supplied through multiple well fields operated by EVN. These include locations such as Palt, Gemeinlebarn, Pottenbrunn, Böheimkirchen, and Königstetten. Thanks to the interconnected nature of the water supply system, EVN can draw upon a wide range of water sources to ensure continuous delivery to the region. Water usage typically rises significantly during summer months compared to colder seasons. According to Zach, current consumption levels in the area served by EVN are near the upper end of the normal range but remain typical for this time of year. He noted that the quality of EVN’s water is “top,” thanks to natural filtration systems that produce very soft water. This makes it almost indistinguishable from Vienna’s high-spring water. Residents of the affected communities will not notice any changes in their water bills, as billing practices remain unchanged. The switch to EVN’s water supply does not affect the financial obligations of the residents, ensuring continuity in service without additional costs. The shift comes amid heightened awareness of water management challenges in the region. With Vienna’s population growing and seasonal demands fluctuating, local authorities have been exploring alternative solutions to maintain reliable water supply. EVN’s involvement represents a strategic move to diversify sources and reduce pressure on existing infrastructure.
