WhatsApp has introduced a new feature allowing users to register custom usernames without sharing their phone numbers, marking a significant shift in how users can communicate on the platform. According to Meta's official statement, this functionality will be available starting this week, with a full rollout planned throughout the year. The introduction of usernames is particularly important given WhatsApp’s massive global user base, which exceeds three billion people. With such a large number of users, there is a high likelihood that many desired usernames will overlap. To address this, Meta has opted to open the registration process early, giving users ample time to select their preferred names before the feature becomes fully active. Additionally, the company plans to provide an automated name generator to assist users who find it challenging to choose a suitable username. For small businesses, creators, and organizations, the option to retain existing usernames from Instagram or Facebook will ensure brand consistency across platforms.

A critical aspect of this new feature is the absence of public directories or contact suggestions. Users will not be able to search for profiles based on usernames, meaning that initiating a conversation requires knowing someone's exact username. Furthermore, an optional "username key," akin to a PIN code, can be set up by users. This additional layer of security ensures that only those who know the specific code can send messages, thereby increasing control over who can reach out.

Once activated, the feature will hide phone numbers during conversations, provided the user has enabled this setting. This change is designed to protect users' personal information while still allowing them to maintain connections. To reserve a username, users must use the latest version of the app and navigate to the settings under the account section.
