In the heart of Slovenia’s Istrian peninsula, more than 200 kilometers south-west of Maribor, a small town named Poreč has become a summer haven for thousands of children from the city. The VIRC Poreč, a youth hostel run by the Maribor Youth Association (Zveza prijateljev mladine Maribor), has long been known as a place of rest and recreation, but its significance extends far beyond mere holidays. For nearly four decades, this facility has served as a space where generations of young people have created lasting memories, learned independence, and forged friendships that endure into adulthood. This year, however, the community faces a critical challenge: the need for renewal. The VIRC Poreč operates during the summer months, offering a unique experience for children aged 7 to 15 who come from all over Maribor and surrounding areas. Each year, hundreds of families send their children to spend ten days in the countryside, away from screens and daily routines. During this time, the children engage in activities designed to foster self-reliance, creativity, and social bonding. Proponents describe the environment as a “parallel universe,” one where time moves differently and the focus shifts from technology to human connection. Despite its popularity, the VIRC Poreč has faced increasing pressure to modernize. Over the past few years, the number of participants has grown steadily, placing additional strain on the existing infrastructure. According to reports, the facility has accommodated more than 65,000 children since its founding in 1988. However, the aging buildings and outdated facilities have made it increasingly difficult to meet the evolving needs of both staff and visitors. Some of the oldest structures within the complex require urgent repairs, which have proven costly and complicated due to limited funding and logistical challenges. Volunteers play a central role in maintaining the operation of the VIRC Poreč. Many of them are local residents who dedicate their free time, often replacing their vacation with 24-hour responsibility, to ensure the smooth running of the center. These individuals, some of whom have been involved for years, form the backbone of the organization. Their commitment is driven by a deep sense of community and a belief in the transformative power of such experiences for young people. One of the key factors contributing to the success of the VIRC Poreč is its ability to bridge social divides. Children from different backgrounds, regardless of economic status, family structure, or cultural origin, are brought together under one roof. This shared experience helps break down barriers and fosters mutual understanding. In a region marked by historical tensions, the VIRC Poreč stands as a rare example of collective effort aimed at building unity through childhood.
