(INTERVIEW) Director of VIRC Poreč: Children are being overworked, so some young people have no work habits

Ana Maria Matošević, who has been working at the VIRC Poreč summer camp for over 26 years, recently spoke with reporters about her experiences managing the facility during the summer months. As the administrator since 2015, she oversees operations at the center, which hosts Maribor youth during their summer holidays. Matošević emphasized the importance of maintaining strict routines and discipline among the children, noting that many young people lack proper work habits due to excessive indulgence. Matošević's journey began by chance when she was looking for a job that would allow her to stay home with her one-year-old child. She found a position at VIRC in 2000 and has remained there ever since. Initially working part-time, she gradually transitioned into a full-time role, eventually becoming the administrator seven years ago. Despite the demanding nature of the job, especially during peak season, she has adapted well to the non-stop rhythm required at the camp. Each day begins with a meeting with the staff and caretakers, where they review the previous day’s activities, discuss weather forecasts, and address any issues. Matošević highlighted the structured approach taken at VIRC, emphasizing that clear guidelines and daily schedules are essential for maintaining order. The routine includes regular inspections and evaluations, ensuring that everything runs smoothly according to established protocols. The VIRC building, which has stood for 38 years, requires urgent renovation. Matošević noted that while some areas have been updated, such as bathrooms and hallways, the main building, including the kitchen and dining area, needs substantial repairs. Without these improvements, the structure risks further deterioration. The owner of VIRC is the Association of Friends of Youth (ZPM) Maribor, and Matošević stressed the need for continued investment from ZPM to ensure the sustainability of the facility. The difference between the summer season and the school year is significant. During the summer, the focus is on providing a structured environment for the children, whereas during the school term, the emphasis shifts to other activities. Matošević mentioned that the challenges faced during the summer months require constant vigilance and adaptability from the staff. Matošević also discussed the cultural aspects of working at VIRC, noting that her accent makes it difficult for her to speak perfect Croatian, despite having spent part of her childhood in Slovenia. This linguistic challenge does not hinder her ability to connect with the children and staff, highlighting her deep understanding of the needs of the youth she works with. The ongoing renovations and maintenance efforts at VIRC reflect the commitment of both the management and the owners to provide a safe and functional environment for the children. With the upcoming summer season approaching, the focus will remain on ensuring that all necessary preparations are made to accommodate the influx of young visitors. The success of VIRC depends on sustained support and investment from its stakeholders, ensuring that it continues to serve the community effectively.
