Researchers from the Shoreline organization have documented an unusual sight in the Tršćanski Zaljev – a large group of critically endangered sea pigeons (Aetomylaeus bovinus) gathering at a mussel farm. The footage, captured using drones, shows dozens of these birds feeding on submerged ropes used for cultivating mussels, completely ignoring the researchers filming them. This rare occurrence has both thrilled scientists and alarmed local farmers, who report significant damage to their crops. While the presence of such a large number of sea pigeons is unprecedented in the area and possibly across the Adriatic and Mediterranean, experts warn of the growing conflict between agricultural interests and conservation efforts. Farmers already struggle with empty ropes and partial destruction by other marine predators like sharks. Researchers are now calling for a working group involving biodiversity departments, fisheries, and representatives of protected areas to address this emerging issue.
