Sea dates - Mysterious artists of the rock caves

The article discusses the marine mollusk known as the 'morski datelj' (Lithophaga lithophaga), which lives in the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. This small creature is hidden within limestone caves, where it slowly drills through the rock using specialized proteins and mechanical action rather than acid. It creates a safe living space inside the stone, remaining there for its entire life. The mollusk feeds by filtering seawater, extracting organic particles, and relies on clean marine environments. Reproduction occurs through external fertilization, with larvae drifting in the plankton until they settle on suitable rocks. Due to its extremely slow growth—taking 15 to 35 years to reach five centimeters—it is highly vulnerable to habitat destruction. Because harvesting these mollusks requires breaking coastal stones, it causes significant damage to coastal ecosystems and the habitats of other marine organisms. As a result, it is strictly protected in the European Union and beyond.

Young specimens of the giant squirrel have been spotted in the Fatty Cape National Park

In the Krajinski Park Debeli Rtič, researchers from the Maritime Biological Station Piran observed three young specimens of the large sea hare during fieldwork. This is considered optimistic news, as these organisms are among the most endangered species in the Mediterranean. The young hares face significant challenges, including predation by crabs and human activities like anchoring, which can damage their habitat. Researchers emphasize the need to respect restrictions within protected areas to ensure their survival.

Bias read (Center): The article presents a scientific observation and conservation efforts without overt ideological framing. It focuses on environmental concerns and research findings rather than political advocacy or partisan perspectives.
