A German fraudster convicted of organized deception has reportedly fled to Moscow, according to authorities in Osnabrück. Hendrik Holt, who received more than eight years in prison for fraud, bribery, and document forgery, did not return to his open custody facility in southern Berlin after an authorized absence on August 25. The public prosecutor’s office confirmed that Holt had informed the prison via email that he would not return, prompting immediate search efforts. The incident came to light after Holt posted images and a video on his verified Instagram account, which appeared to show him in Moscow. The post included a nighttime street scene with the caption “Love greetings from Moscow, the caviar is fantastic.” A video showed a pink house and a yellow neighboring building with a red poster advertising an opera performance. According to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, comparisons with Yandex Maps, a Russian mapping service, suggest the location is in the northeastern district of Basmannyj in Moscow. The weather conditions described in the post align with reports from the World Meteorological Organization, indicating cloudy skies on the day the content was uploaded. Despite these details, questions remain about whether Holt himself was present in Moscow at the time. It is possible that someone else recorded the footage, or that the video was altered using artificial intelligence. The authenticity of the content has yet to be independently verified. Holt, 36, once hailed as an entrepreneurial prodigy from the Emsland region, orchestrated a scheme involving fictitious wind farms. He and others marketed non-existent projects to several foreign energy companies, leading them to sign contracts based on forged documents. His arrest took place in April 2020 at the luxurious Berlin hotel Adlon, where investigators seized luxury cars, jewelry, and cash. In 2022, a commercial criminal court sentenced Holt to seven-and-a-half years in prison for fraud. Additional charges later increased his sentence. In 2023, Holt and other co-defendants withdrew their appeals before the Federal Court of Justice, making the verdict final. Initially incarcerated in a prison in Lower Saxony, Holt requested a transfer to Berlin in the summer of 2023. The Berlin justice system employs open custody more frequently than other states, aiming to reintegrate offenders into society quickly. This approach appears to have backfired in Holt’s case.
