Fan specialist EBM-Papst sold to US group
The German ventilation specialist EBM-Papst has been sold to a US-based company for nearly five billion euros. The deal involves the acquisition of the family-owned firm by Madison Air, a publicly traded American corporation. Based in Mulfingen, Baden-Württemberg, EBM-Papst will remain headquartered there despite the sale. The net purchase price amounts to 4.775 billion euros, with the company valued at 5.1 billion euros overall. The transaction requires regulatory approval and is expected to be finalized by year-end. The sale marks a major shift for EBM-Papst, which has operated as a family business for decades. The current shareholders, who have held the company since its inception, will exit after the transaction. According to reports, the outgoing owners see Madison Air as an ideal partner due to its long-standing commitment to sustainable corporate development and expertise in air and cooling technologies. Madison Air, which employs approximately 9,000 workers globally, generates annual revenues of around 3.5 billion dollars. It specializes in ventilation, filtration, and cooling systems, making it a strategic fit for EBM-Papst's core competencies. Klaus Geißdörfer, CEO of EBM-Papst, expressed confidence in the partnership, stating that Madison Air understands the company’s strengths and can help expand its market leadership. He emphasized that the new ownership would provide better access to the US market, particularly in sectors such as data centers, which require advanced cooling solutions. Geißdörfer noted that EBM-Papst has already established a strong presence in Europe and Asia, complementing Madison Air’s limited footprint in these regions. This synergy, he argued, would allow both companies to grow their service offerings and capitalize on emerging opportunities in artificial intelligence infrastructure. Madison Air’s chief executive, Jill Wyant, welcomed the acquisition, saying the company is confident in building upon EBM-Papst’s existing foundation. She highlighted the potential for collaboration in areas such as customer support and innovation. EBM-Papst, which currently employs over 13,000 people worldwide, more than half based in Germany, has seen steady growth in recent years. In its last fiscal year, ending March 2026, the company reported a six percent increase in revenue, reaching approximately 2.24 billion euros. However, this growth was partly influenced by the company’s withdrawal from certain business segments. Core operations saw a twelve percent rise in sales during the same period. For the upcoming fiscal year, EBM-Papst anticipates more than ten percent revenue growth in its continued business lines. While the company does not disclose its profitability, it highlights its focus on sustainability and technological advancement. The acquisition by Madison Air is expected to enhance EBM-Papst’s global reach and reinforce its position in high-demand markets. With Madison Air’s extensive experience in cooling and ventilation technologies, the combined entity could leverage synergies to drive further expansion and innovation. The transaction underscores a broader trend of cross-border acquisitions in the industrial sector, driven by the need for specialized expertise and market diversification.
