Firefighter accused of threatening Ranka Ostojic: "Malj is ready and sharp"

A professional firefighter with the Public Fire Department in Imotski has been charged with threatening a member of parliament from the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Ranko Ostojić, according to the municipal state prosecutor’s office in Split. The charge was filed following a social media comment made by the firefighter on April 23, in which he allegedly threatened Ostojić after responding to a post about the 81st anniversary of the Jasenovac uprising. The prosecutor's office alleges that the firefighter posted a message on Facebook criticizing Ostojić’s comments on the historical event. The message reportedly read: “It’s a shame you weren’t among them, the air would have been much cleaner. Go there, idiots, if you don’t go soon, believe me, you’ll soon be gone. Malj is ready and sharpened. Is your mother still alive?” The term “malj” is a colloquial expression often used to refer to a child or someone young, though its exact meaning can vary depending on context. The state prosecutor’s office has recommended that the court issue a criminal order against the firefighter, proposing conditional imprisonment for ten months with a three-year probation period. If the case proceeds to trial, the prosecution suggests that the court should impose the same sentence with a three-year review period. In response to the charges, the firefighter has denied wrongdoing and claims that he did not commit a criminal act. He also asserts that the language attributed to him in the indictment does not reflect his actual statements or intentions. According to his defense, the words used against him are not representative of his character or conduct. The controversy arose after Ostojić published a statement commemorating the 81st anniversary of the Jasenovac uprising. In the post, Ostojić described the event as a moment when approximately 670 prisoners, many suffering from illness or weakness, attempted to break out of the Jasenovac concentration camp. Only 89 of them succeeded in escaping. Those who were unable to participate in the breakout were executed and burned along with the camp structures. Ostojić noted that over 83,000 people were killed in the Jasenovac camp, a number he compared to the population of the city of Zadar. Ostojić’s post highlighted the tragic outcome of the uprising, emphasizing the loss of life during the attempt to escape the camp. His remarks sparked a public reaction, leading to the firefighter’s online response. The incident has raised questions about freedom of speech and the boundaries of acceptable discourse, particularly regarding sensitive historical topics.
