The annual Ljubljana Open Air Cinema, known as Film pod zvezdami, concluded its summer season on Saturday with a screening of the film Fjord, which won this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The event took place at Ljubljana Castle's courtyard, drawing approximately 13,000 spectators. Organizers confirmed that the festival was held in collaboration with Ljubljana Castle and marked the end of the open-air cinema season before transitioning into the traditional Letni Kinodvor (Annual Open Air Cinema) at Congress Square. This event will run from August 24 to 27, 2026, with four classic films shown each evening at 8:30 PM free of charge. The Letni Kinodvor will feature films dedicated to notable anniversaries and milestones in the history of world cinematography. It aims to position Ljubljana alongside other major cultural tourism projects such as those in Locarno, Paris, London, Bologna, and Vienna. The opening film of the Letni Kinodvor will be General (The General, Buster Keaton, Clyde Bruckman, 1926), celebrating its 100th anniversary. Described as a perfect blend of action, comedy, and drama, the film is considered one of the greatest ever made by many critics and represents the pinnacle of silent comedy. On Tuesday, August 25, the festival will honor the 100th anniversary of Marilyn Monroe's birth with the film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (Gospodje imajo raje plavolaske, Howard Hawks, 1953). The movie follows two glamorous cabaret singers, Lorelei and Dorothy, who embark on a luxurious cruise in search of true love. One values her wealth and believes diamonds are a woman's best friend, while the other prefers athletic physique in men. Complications arise when a private detective hired by Lorelei’s fiancé’s suspicious father appears on board. Wednesday, August 26, will bring Persona (1966), a timeless masterpiece by Ingmar Bergman, marking the 60th anniversary of its release. Considered one of the most influential films in cinematic history, Persona continues to intrigue audiences with its complex narrative and themes. On Thursday, August 27, the festival will screen Fargo (1996), a snowy and blood-soaked black comedy directed by the Coen brothers. Featuring Frances McDormand in the role of the cheerful police officer Marge Gunderson, the film celebrates its 30th anniversary and earned McDormand an Oscar for Best Actress. All screenings will take place daily at 8:30 PM. Films will be shown in their original language with Slovenian subtitles, and Persona will also have English subtitles. Admission is free, and the films can be viewed even in case of rain. The event is supported by the main sponsor, Insurance Company Generali, and Turizem Ljubljana. The Letni Kinodvor will continue to offer a diverse selection of classic films, highlighting significant moments in film history.
