In Solčava parish, lightning again ignited a huge fire on a farm

In the village of Solčava, a powerful fire broke out again on a farm, this time at the Ploder farm in Podolševa. The incident occurred late Thursday evening, shortly after 10 p.m., when a lightning strike ignited the blaze. According to reports from the Solčava municipality’s website, the fire was once more caused by lightning, marking the second such occurrence this summer. The flames engulfed a barn, completely destroying it, while also damaging agricultural machinery and partially damaging a residential house. The fire started at the farm's industrial building, specifically the barn, which was entirely consumed by the flames. Inside, all livestock, primarily cattle of the Holstein breed, were present. Local residents managed to save most of the animals from the stalls, with only one cow reportedly perishing due to the impact of the lightning strike. Agricultural equipment and tractor attachments were also destroyed. The farm, located approximately seven kilometers away from the village center and administrative hub of Solčava, had previously suffered a similar fate earlier in the summer. On the night of June 22, during the early part of the season, a fire broke out at the tourist farm Bukovnik in Podolševa, near Raduha. That fire also began due to a lightning strike and resulted in the complete destruction of all agricultural buildings. Livestock perished, and the entire agricultural machinery was lost. The fire also damaged the roof of a residential house, though firefighters succeeded in preventing its spread to other parts of the structure, leaving it heavily damaged. Local firefighters from the Solčava Fire Department responded within less than 20 minutes of receiving the call. Shortly thereafter, units from the Črna na Koroškem, Luče, Ljubno ob Savinji, Okonina, and Radmirje fire departments joined the operation. The area’s well-established water supply system, both for drinking and firefighting purposes, allowed local residents and neighbors to begin cooling down the house before the arrival of the fire department, thus protecting it from total destruction. The repeated incidents highlight the vulnerability of rural properties to natural causes such as lightning strikes. Both fires have led to significant losses for the affected farms, including the loss of livestock and expensive agricultural equipment. The damage has also extended to residential structures, underscoring the broader impact of these events on local communities. Firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the blaze, managing to prevent further spread and minimize additional damage. Despite the efforts, the extent of the destruction remains severe. The situation has prompted discussions among local authorities regarding potential measures to enhance protection against such occurrences, particularly given the frequency of lightning-related fires in the region.
