Officially opened Bled - Bohinj cycle link, section Bohinjska Bela - Obrna closed until end of August

The newly opened cycling route connecting Bled and Bohinj has officially been launched, marking a major step forward in promoting safer and more sustainable mobility in Slovenia. The new path runs independently from motor traffic and spans approximately 20 kilometers between Bled and Bohinjska Bistrica, offering nearly 28 kilometers of continuous cycling connection between Bled and Bohinj lakes. This route is part of the national and Gorenjska region cycling network, designed to enhance both daily commuting and recreational opportunities while supporting tourism in two of Slovenia’s most popular destinations. Construction of the route began in 2022 with a total investment of nearly 25 million euros. Funding came from multiple sources, including the European Union, which contributed 2.9 million euros through the Regional Development Program, local municipalities of Bled and Bohinj, which each allocated 3.2 million euros, and the Slovenian Infrastructure Directorate, which covered the remaining 18.8 million euros. The project was developed under the Interreg Italy-Slovenia program, which also facilitated the creation of cycling rest areas near St. Hema beach and the Grmečica waterfall. Future plans include the installation of a smart bike station near Lake Bled. At the official opening ceremony, Bohinjski Mayor Jože Sodja emphasized that the new route connects not just two towns but also people and shared development goals. He noted its significance for residents, tourists, and recreational cyclists, highlighting improved road safety and enhanced quality of life. Similarly, Bled Mayor Anton Mežan described the route as much more than a new infrastructure project, it represents successful collaboration between municipalities and the state, symbolizing connectivity, responsible stewardship of space, and sustainable development. The route links Bled and Bohinj, encourages eco-friendly mobility, and offers a safer and more pleasant experience for visitors exploring the Save Bohinjka Valley. Both mayors stressed that the new cycle path does not merely offer additional tourist attractions or recreational opportunities for locals but significantly improves road safety for all road users. Until recently, cyclists traveling between Bled and Bohinj had to navigate dangerous and poorly maintained roads. Today, they can enjoy a dedicated, well-designed route that prioritizes their safety and comfort. The event attracted a large number of cyclists from both sides of the route, reflecting widespread enthusiasm for cycling along this new trail. Despite the success of the project, some challenges remain. For instance, the local road through Bohinjska Bela near Obrne is currently closed due to ongoing earthworks related to the stabilization of the ground at the Obrne tunnel. As a result, access from Bled to Obrne via this section will remain restricted until late August. While this temporary closure affects certain parts of the route, it underscores the ongoing efforts required to ensure long-term safety and functionality of the entire cycling network. The route presents a significant engineering challenge, particularly due to the narrow terrain of the Save Bohinjka Valley. Director Nejc Vesel of the Infrastructure Directorate recalled that constructing the path through this area posed considerable difficulties, especially in the section passing through Soteska, where unstable soil conditions required innovative solutions and consensus among stakeholders. “We have created a safe and high-quality connection for cyclists with the new route, overpass, and accompanying infrastructure,” he added. As the new cycle path becomes operational, it promises to transform the way people travel and explore the region, reinforcing Slovenia's commitment to sustainable transportation and environmental responsibility.
