The renovation is now complete: it has been transformed from one of Vienna's most beautiful guesthouses

A once-beloved beer garden near Vienna’s University Hospital has been transformed into a green public space following a recent renovation project. The former area, which occupied around 600 square meters, was historically known as one of the city's most picturesque outdoor dining spots. Now, after several weeks of work, it features seating areas, new shrubs, and a lush, irrigated lawn. In place of the traditional tap with beer, a drinking fountain bearing the logo of the University of Vienna stands at the center of the site, offering free water to visitors. The transformation began in April as part of compensation measures for the upcoming construction of the “Quantum Cube,” a facility for physicists located in the adjacent Hof 2 of the campus. That project will involve sealing approximately 400 square meters of the large meadow. Meanwhile, the former indoor restaurant area and its basement room will be repurposed into a “Student Space.” According to a university spokesperson, Cornelia Blum, this area is expected to open in 2027 as a consumption-free zone for students to gather, study, and relax. The change marks the end of an era for the historic location, which had long been a staple of Vienna’s gastronomic scene. The Unibräu, as it was originally called, opened in 1998 and quickly became a popular destination during spring and summer months. Its outdoor seating was often fully booked without reservations, and it was famous for its charcoal-grilled ribs and specialty beers such as “Magister Märzen” and “Doktor Pilsen,” named after academic titles. Later, under the management of Stefan Hajszan, a pioneer of organic wines in Vienna, the venue also offered high-quality wine selections. However, the quality of service declined significantly after Hajszan left for New Zealand. Online reviews from the 2010s frequently criticized poor food quality, unhelpful staff, and billing errors. As a result, customer numbers dwindled further, and the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic accelerated the decline. A subsequent attempt to revitalize the space with a pizzeria from 2021 to 2023 proved short-lived before the current transformation took shape. The closure of the Unibräu reflects broader trends within Vienna’s hospitality industry, where many traditional venues have struggled to maintain their appeal amid changing consumer preferences and economic pressures. The new green space, however, represents a shift toward creating more accessible, community-oriented environments on the university campus. It adds another small oasis to the existing landscape of the old hospital complex, offering a quiet retreat for students and visitors alike. The project underscores the ongoing efforts to balance urban development with environmental sustainability. By converting previously commercial land into a public park, the university aims to provide a functional yet aesthetically pleasing environment for its students. This initiative aligns with wider goals to enhance campus life through improved infrastructure and recreational spaces. The final phase of the project includes the installation of additional amenities designed to support both relaxation and study. These will include shaded seating areas, walking paths, and designated zones for group activities. The completion of these elements is expected to coincide with the official opening of the Student Space in 2027. Until then, the newly renovated area serves as a temporary green refuge, offering a glimpse of what is to come.
