Overweight increases cancer risk more than previously thought, according to new research led by epidemiologists at Germany's German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). The study suggests that up to 11.5 percent of all cancer cases could be linked to excess body fat, significantly higher than earlier estimates which ranged between two and eight percent. This finding challenges previous assumptions and highlights the need for updated public health strategies regarding obesity and cancer prevention. The research team, led by epidemiologist Hermann Brenner, analyzed data from 458,543 men and women drawn from the UK Biobank, a large-scale health database. Over a period of approximately twelve years, these participants were monitored, during which time 50,000 new cancer diagnoses were recorded. Unlike prior studies that relied solely on the Body Mass Index (BMI) to assess weight-related risks, this study incorporated additional metrics such as waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio. These measures provide a more nuanced understanding of how fat distribution affects cancer risk. Michael Leitzmann, an epidemiologist at the University of Regensburg who was not involved in the study, emphasized that the findings indicate previous assessments might have underestimated the link between overweight and cancer. He noted that the traditional reliance on BMI can be misleading because it does not differentiate between fat and muscle mass nor account for where fat is stored on the body. Leitzmann explained that visceral fat, fat stored around the abdominal area, is particularly concerning. It functions similarly to an endocrine gland, releasing signaling molecules known as adipokines into the bloodstream. These molecules influence metabolic processes throughout the body, including cell growth, division, and programmed cell death. Such changes can contribute to the development and progression of tumors. The researchers aimed to address another potential bias in earlier studies: the possibility that some individuals lost weight due to an undiagnosed cancer before participating in the study. To mitigate this issue, they excluded cancer cases diagnosed within the first few years of observation, focusing instead on those occurring seven years after enrollment. This approach helped ensure that the observed associations between weight and cancer were not confounded by pre-existing conditions. The study found that certain types of cancer, including colorectal, breast, and liver cancers, showed a stronger correlation with overweight and obesity compared to other forms. Additionally, the research identified increased risks for ten other cancer types, expanding the scope of concern beyond previously recognized categories. These findings suggest that obesity is a more pervasive factor in cancer development than previously understood. Public health experts and medical professionals have long been aware of the connection between obesity and chronic diseases, but this study provides a clearer picture of its impact on cancer specifically. The implications extend beyond individual health choices, influencing policy decisions related to nutrition, physical activity promotion, and healthcare resource allocation.
