According to the findings, the risk of developing cancer due to excess body fat is up to twice as high as previously believed. For years, BMI, calculated using height and weight, has been considered a simple measure of health. It was thought that maintaining a BMI within the normal range of 18.5 to 24.9 would lower the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and even cancer. However, recent evidence suggests that BMI alone provides an overly simplistic and potentially inaccurate assessment of health, especially when it comes to cancer risk. A new analysis conducted by Brenner’s team shows that the link between body fat and cancer is far stronger than previously understood. Fat tissue functions beyond mere energy storage; it produces hormones and triggers inflammation, both of which can contribute to tumor formation. Moreover, excessive white fat often leads to insulin resistance and elevated blood insulin levels. Insulin is not only responsible for transporting glucose into cells but also acts as a growth factor that promotes rapid division of cancer cells. While researchers have long recognized the connection between fat and cancer, they have traditionally relied on BMI to assess this relationship. However, this approach has limitations. A muscular individual with a high BMI could have a different composition compared to someone with higher body fat. This discrepancy means that BMI does not always accurately reflect the amount of fat in the body. As a result, there has been growing pressure to consider alternative measures such as waist circumference or the ratio of waist to height when assessing disease risk. In their latest study, Brenner and his colleagues sought to address these shortcomings. They included data from over 450,000 individuals from the UK Biobank, tracking them for an average of twelve years. During this period, approximately 50,000 developed cancer. When comparing BMI and waist measurements as predictors of cancer risk, the latter proved significantly more informative. By excluding early years of the study to reduce bias caused by cancer-induced weight loss, the researchers were able to better isolate the impact of prior obesity on cancer incidence. The results indicate that obesity has been underestimated as a contributing factor to cancer. Previously, it was estimated that around 5.5 percent of cancer cases could be attributed to overweight status. The new findings suggest this figure could be as high as 11.5 percent. These numbers highlight the importance of refining how we assess body fat and its associated health risks. The study underscores the need for more accurate indicators of body composition, such as waist size, to improve our understanding of cancer causation and prevention strategies.
