A passenger was arrested on Thursday for allegedly attempting to open the emergency exit of a Batik Air flight en route to Kochi, Kerala. The incident took place during the flight’s journey from Kuala Lumpur to Kochi on Wednesday, between 9:30 pm and 11:05 pm. According to an FIR filed by Batik Air’s Security In-Charge at Kochi, the accused, identified as Jamsheer Athanikkal, an Indian national from Kootannad in Palakkad district, damaged the emergency exit window panel and threatened fellow passengers, posing a danger to the safety of all onboard. Jamsheer was traveling aboard flight OD231 when he attempted to forcibly open the emergency door. Cabin crew and other passengers reportedly intervened to prevent him from doing so. A video capturing the incident circulated on social media following the flight’s landing in Kochi. While the footage shows cabin staff and passengers trying to restrain Jamsheer, the authenticity of the clip could not be independently verified by the source. Following his disembarkation, Jamsheer was taken into custody by CISF personnel and subsequently handed over to the Nedumbassery Police Station for further investigation. He has been charged under several sections of Indian law, including Section 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for criminal intimidation, Section 11A of the Aircraft Act for breaching safety or security protocols, and Section 118(e) of the Kerala Police Act for actions endangering public safety.
