Three South African innovations to compete for global glory at SDG Olympiad in Kenya

Three South African university startups have been selected to represent their institutions at the SDG Olympiad Regional Championships in Nairobi, Kenya, this August. The teams, chosen from the University of Cape Town (UCT), the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), and the University of Venda (Univen), will compete against other student-led ventures across Africa in a bid to qualify for the SDG Olympiad Global Finals in Switzerland later this year. Their innovations address critical global issues, including clean water access, sustainable urban living, and public health, all in alignment with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The UCT team, Amanzi X, is based in Cape Town and focuses on SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. The startup has developed an AI-driven platform that uses machine learning, sensor data, and digital twin technology to assist municipal authorities in detecting water leaks, identifying anomalies, and predicting pipeline failures. This system allows water providers to shift from reactive to proactive maintenance, significantly reducing water loss and enhancing long-term water security. By leveraging predictive analytics, Amanzi X aims to improve efficiency and sustainability in urban water management systems. From Wits, DRIP TAILORS (PTY) LTD presents an innovative solution targeting SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. The startup specializes in converting discarded textile waste into thermal insulation materials used in residential buildings. This initiative not only repurposes unwanted fabrics but also contributes to the circular economy by extending the lifecycle of textiles. Additionally, it improves housing conditions, particularly in underserved communities, by providing affordable and energy-efficient insulation options. The University of Venda’s entry, CAMELLIA INNOVATIONS (PTY) LTD, is addressing SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being. The biotechnology firm is working on Mellivarin, an antimicrobial peptide developed through artificial intelligence and advanced computational biology. Designed to combat antimicrobial resistance, a major global health threat, Mellivarin offers a novel approach to treating infections caused by drug-resistant bacteria. The project combines cutting-edge research with practical applications, aiming to provide new therapeutic options in both clinical and community settings. All three teams were selected after participating in the SDG Olympiad program, which supports university students in creating scalable solutions to global sustainability challenges. The program fosters collaboration among young innovators, provides mentorship from industry experts, and facilitates connections with investors and stakeholders. It also offers participants valuable exposure, helping them refine their business models and expand their networks. Participation in the regional championships represents a crucial step for these startups. Success there could lead to qualification for the Global Finals in Switzerland, where they would join other top student entrepreneurs from around the world.
