Accused Thai school shooter had watched violent content online, police say

A 14-year-old boy is suspected of carrying out a deadly school shooting near Bangkok, Thailand, authorities confirmed on August 9, 2026. According to police, the suspect had previously accessed violent content online and had shown interest in learning how to use firearms through social media. The incident occurred at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, located in the Bang Kruai district of Nonthaburi province, just outside the capital city. The attack left at least nine people dead, with more than 20 others injured, marking one of the deadliest mass shootings in Thailand since 2022. The shooting began at the suspect's home, where he reportedly killed his grandparents before heading to the school. There, he allegedly shot six additional victims before turning the weapon on himself. Police identified the suspect as a teenager who had lived with his grandparents for 12 years following the separation of his parents. Deputy Commissioner Atthapol Anusit of the Provincial Police Region 1 stated that the boy had shown signs of interest in firearms for about one to two years prior to the attack. During this period, he had engaged with online material related to weapons and had even attempted to bring a BB gun, also known as an air gun, to school, which was subsequently confiscated by a teacher last year. Further investigation revealed that the suspect carried a knife in his possession and that other evidence recovered from the scene included a firearm, spent cartridge casings, and a personal computer. Forensic examination of the device showed that the boy had viewed content involving acts of violence. However, there was currently no conclusive evidence that he had practiced using a real firearm. Atthapol noted that police had conducted interviews with 17 witnesses and were continuing their inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the attack. In response to the tragedy, the Ministry of Education announced plans to implement new safety measures within schools over the next three months. These initiatives include mandatory mental health screenings for students, a referral system for identifying and assisting individuals at risk, regular emergency response drills, efforts to combat bullying, and improved methods for preventing dangerous objects from entering school premises. The ministry emphasized its commitment to creating safer environments for students and staff. This incident has sparked renewed discussions about gun control in Thailand, a country where civilian ownership of firearms is relatively common. While legal restrictions exist, enforcement varies, and access to certain types of weapons can still be obtained with minimal oversight. The recent shooting has raised concerns among lawmakers and educators about the need for stricter regulations and enhanced monitoring of both physical and digital spaces where young people might encounter harmful influences. Authorities have not yet disclosed whether the suspect had any prior history of mental health issues or behavioral problems.
