Jilted man attacks ex-fiancée, her sister with acid in Hapur

In Bihar’s Purani Bazar area, a couple and three of their children were injured in an acid attack following a financial dispute. The incident took place on August 29 under the supervision of the Kesariya Police Station. According to a police statement, the attack occurred during a heated argument between the parties involved over a monetary transaction. A 22-year-old man named Harsh Bhati, residing in Awas Vikas Colony, allegedly entered a home in Madhapur village, Hapur, and attacked a 21-year-old woman and her 19-year-old sister with acid. The assault happened around 2 am while the victims were asleep. They were found screaming by other family members, prompting a Dial-112 emergency call at approximately 3 am. Both women sustained burns to their hands and shoulders and were taken to a local hospital before being transferred to a medical facility in Meerut. They are currently reported to be in stable condition. Harsh Bhati, the accused, was apprehended by police. His arrest followed a formal complaint from the victims’ father, Roshan, who explained that the family had previously agreed to marry his elder daughter to Bhati. However, the union was called off after the family discovered Bhati’s habit of heavy drinking and problematic behavior. “He was angry over the decision and threatened us,” Roshan told police. “We never imagined that he would attack my daughters with acid while they were sleeping.” According to Garhmukteshwar Circle Officer Rahul Yadav, the accused has been placed in custody, and legal procedures are ongoing. An FIR has been filed against him. Police are currently questioning Bhati to identify the source of the acid and understand the circumstances leading to the attack. On August 14, a 42-year-old man named Rahmatullah, along with his wife Aushma, reportedly sold a nine-day-old baby boy to a couple in Bengaluru for ₹1 lakh. The infants’ parents were identified as Shameen Taj, 30, and Syed Akbar Basha, 35. The sale was arranged through intermediaries who were known to have absconded. Aushma had given birth to the child at Government Medical College Hospital in Vellore, but due to financial strain, her husband was unemployed, the family considered selling the child to provide better conditions. Upon learning of the situation, hospital authorities attempted to examine the newborn, which led to the involvement of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) in Tirupattur. Based on a complaint from the CWC, Ambur Town police registered a case and successfully located the Bengaluru couple. The child was recovered and is now under protective custody.
