Sweetener in gum, jam, toothpaste tied to higher stroke, heart attack risk, new study finds

A recent study presented at the ESC Congress 2026 suggests that high blood levels of xylitol, a common sugar substitute found in gum, jam, toothpaste, and other products, are associated with increased risks of stroke, heart attack, and death. The research analyzed data from 17,710 participants across two long-term studies, finding that individuals with the highest xylitol levels had a 57% higher risk of major cardiovascular events over six years, even after adjusting for various risk factors. Similar trends were observed in a longer European cohort. Xylitol, though naturally present in small amounts, is added in much larger quantities to foods and beverages. Previous research has linked xylitol to enhanced blood clotting, raising concerns about its safety despite being widely considered harmless.
