Through the high green, the hemp maze opens

On July 22, 2026, visitors were invited to explore a unique attraction near Zeulenroda in the Greiz district, a towering field of industrial hemp plants arranged into a maze-like path. The site, operated by the Pahren Agrar Kooperation, features rows of hemp plants growing up to two meters high, creating a natural obstacle course through which tourists can walk. This initiative, known as the “Hanflabyrinth,” has become a notable feature of the local agrarian landscape. The concept of the Hanflabyrinth was conceived several years ago by René Kolbe, managing director of the Pahren Agrar Kooperation. He recalled that the idea emerged during discussions with colleagues who had observed maize mazes elsewhere. “We thought, why not create one using hemp?” he explained. Since its inception, the labyrinth has been part of the company’s efforts to educate the public about industrial hemp cultivation and its applications beyond traditional uses. Industrial hemp, a variety of Cannabis sativa, is legal for agricultural purposes in Germany under strict regulations. The plants grown at the Pahren Agrar Kooperation are used in industries such as automotive manufacturing and plastic production. Kolbe noted that the current crop has grown uniformly, making the maze visually appealing and safe for visitors. “We have luck, the plants look good,” he remarked. The Hanflabyrinth is not just a recreational activity; it serves an educational purpose. Information boards placed throughout the maze provide insights into the cultivation process, the benefits of industrial hemp, and its role in sustainable agriculture. Kolbe described the project as having a “teaching mission.” “I see a pedagogical opportunity here,” he said, emphasizing the potential for both entertainment and learning. While maize labyrinths are common in many parts of Germany, the inclusion of industrial hemp in such settings is relatively new. With over 15 seasons of operation, the team has developed strategies to maintain the health of the plants while ensuring visitor safety.
