Stellantis wants to equip models with swarm intelligence from Mobileye

Stellantis has announced plans to equip some of its vehicle models with cloud-based assistance systems developed by Mobileye, an Israeli company known for its advanced driver-assistance technologies. The first vehicles featuring this system are expected to hit the market in 2027. This initiative marks a significant step forward in integrating swarm intelligence into automotive safety and navigation features. The system, referred to as Cloud-Enhanced ADAS by Mobileye, leverages the Road Experience Management (REM) technology, which utilizes swarm intelligence to enhance assisted driving capabilities. REM collects data on road signs, traffic lights, lanes, speed limits, crosswalks, and other relevant street features. It does so by accessing front-facing cameras installed in vehicles equipped with Mobileye’s EyeQ System-on-Chip (SoC). These data points are then anonymized and uploaded to a central cloud server for processing. The resulting database provides updated street information that can be shared back with participating vehicles. Mobileye's REM system has already been deployed across over eight million vehicles, collecting more than 54 million kilometers of data in the past year. According to reports, more than 95 percent of public roads in both Europe and the United States have been mapped, ranging from highways to densely populated urban areas. This extensive coverage ensures that drivers benefit from up-to-date and accurate navigational support. The integration of such advanced technology aims to improve overall driving safety and efficiency. By continuously updating road information through a network of connected vehicles, the system helps reduce the likelihood of accidents caused by outdated or incorrect information. Additionally, the use of anonymized data ensures privacy concerns are addressed while still allowing for comprehensive mapping improvements. Stellantis, which operates under several international brands including Opel, Chrysler, Citroën, Peugeot, and Fiat, has yet to specify which exact models will be among the first to feature the Cloud-Enhanced ADAS. However, the decision reflects a broader industry trend toward leveraging cloud computing and artificial intelligence in automotive applications. As part of this strategy, Stellantis is positioning itself at the forefront of innovation in vehicle safety and connectivity. The implementation of these new technologies is likely to face regulatory scrutiny, particularly regarding data privacy and cybersecurity standards. Nonetheless, the potential benefits, such as enhanced situational awareness and improved route optimization, are substantial. With the rollout planned for 2027, stakeholders in the automotive sector are preparing for a transformative shift in how vehicles interact with their environments.
