Social Democrats in the EP: The situation in Serbia, which has long been a matter of deep concern, has further deteriorated over the past year

The Social Democrats (S&D), the second-largest group in the European Parliament, have expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation in Serbia during the past year. They highlighted ongoing erosion of political rights and civil liberties, weakening institutions, regression in the accession process, and decisions contradicting European values. The group emphasized the importance of continued pressure from the European Union on Serbia’s government, criticizing reports indicating the EU Commission might restart negotiations under Cluster 3, which focuses on competitiveness and inclusive growth. Concerns were raised regarding Serbia’s growing ties with China’s Communist Party and a campaign of intimidation targeting those who spoke out about alleged use of sound cannons during protests in March 2025. Additionally, the S&D criticized President Aleksandar Vučić for attempting to destabilize the EU-Western Balkans summit in Montenegro and for his apparent alignment with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s approach. The group stressed that the EU cannot reward Serbia’s government with progress toward membership based on superficial reforms by Vučić.
