New York's skyscrapers are in danger of collapsing
A skyscraper in downtown Manhattan, New York, was evacuated after reports that it risks collapsing. The building, which has 37 floors, along with nine surrounding buildings and a school with approximately 400 students, were emptied. Emergency services and police were called to the scene. According to Mayor Zohran Mamdani, bricks fell from the building early Tuesday morning, and construction workers reported that two load-bearing beams on the 21st floor had bent during an expansion project. Additional cracks and sagging floors were discovered on the same floor. The mayor stated that the building remains unstable and that further movement was observed in one of the damaged beams. No injuries have been reported yet, and rescue personnel and engineers are continuing their investigation. The skyscraper previously housed the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and is currently being converted into a luxury rental complex with 1,500 apartments.
